Hearing the name "Gulshan" brings to mind an image of busyness, affluence, and luxurious living. However, many of us do not know the history of "Gulshan", known as the affluent area of Dhaka.
Gulshan's previous name was "Bhola" or Bhola Gram. The area was located outside the main Dhaka. It was known as a very uninhabited area.
As people from Bhola Island came to cultivate here, the people of Dhaka gave the area the name "Bhola Gram". The name Bhola was lost after the country became independent.
The word Gulshan means "flower garden". "Gulshan" was the name of an elite area in Karachi, Pakistan. People who like to live peacefully are attracted to this place. This area was named "Gulshan" because there was an attempt to decorate it like the elite area of Pakistan.
Gulshan was a small residential area in the eighties. Which caught the eye of various developer companies in the nineties.
Billionaire Zahurul Islam transformed Gulshan into a residential area. Then at that time, the then chairman of DIT, Madani Saheb, acquired the entire Bhola village. At the same time, he built the necessary structures.
Various sources indicate that in the 1960s, there were no buses, bridges, street lights, police stations, security, schools, colleges, or markets in Gulshan.
According to the Dhaka Puran Book, in the 1970s, small tigers or tiger cubs could also be seen in the forests of Gulshan.
Currently, except for the name Bhola on the nameplate of Gulshan Jame Mosque and about ten houses on Road No. 80 in Gulshan II, that old tradition of Gulshan cannot be found anywhere.
Gulshan is generally considered the "best area" in Dhaka city. It is a very influential area. Currently, it is about 50% residential, 32% commercial and diplomatic, and 18% land.
This is where the most luxurious residential areas of Dhaka have been developed. There are also several embassies and residences of high-ranking officials. That is why Gulshan is one of the safest areas of Dhaka. And the crime rate here is also very low.
Gulshan is a part of Dhaka North City Corporation and has an area of 8.85 sq km. It is located near Mohakhali, Korail slums and Banani Lake which flows through the middle.
The area is divided into 2 parts based on the type of people living here and the activities they engage in. Gulshan 1 and Gulshan 2. These areas include Baridhara, Niketan, Banani and the main Gulshan town.
